Irish construction sector to receive €35m boost

Irish construction sales jobs could become more widespread as the country has been promised a €35.7 million sector rejuvenation from the European Globalisation fund.

The European Parliament voted in favour of the boost in a move that aims to counteract the recent industry redundancies experienced in the wake of the sovereign debt crisis.

Once the ballot was in, the European Council then approved the scheme that could be used to boosted industry professionals’ skills.

Fine Gael Cork senator Colm Burke called for the government to ensure the money was evenly spread so that the right people benefited from the fund.

He said: “I am calling on he government, as I have done in the past, to ensure that the full extent of these funds are delivered to our unemployed.”

Meanwhile, Phil Prendergast, member of the European Parliament, blamed the Fine Fail government for the downfall of the industry.

Speaking from Strasbourg, he said: “Our economic collapse had a particularly dramatic effect on the construction sector because the previous government had adopted an unsustainable development model.”
